Examples

For these examples, consider the following table and contents:

CREATE TABLE jabberwocky(line TEXT(50));

INSERT INTO jabberwocky VALUES
   ('''Twas brillig, and the slithy toves'), (' Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:')
   ,('All mimsy were the borogoves,'), (' And the mome raths outgrabe.')
   ,('"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!'), (' The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!')
   ,('Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun'), ('      The frumious Bandersnatch!"');

Trimming a literal value

t=> SELECT LTRIM('            SQream DB');
ltrim
---------
SQream DB

Trimming a column of values

In this example we use || (Concatenate) to show the leading spaces.

t=> SELECT ('Line: ' || line) as untrimmed, ('Line: ' || LTRIM(line)) as trimmed FROM jabberwocky;
untrimmed                                             | trimmed
